Family Photoshoot in Los Angeles with Emily Winnie Photography
When it comes to planning your family photoshoot in Los Angeles, you might think our city doesn’t offer much in the way of traditional outdoor scenery—for example, we don’t get the dramatic “turning of the leaves” that you see in the East or North. But, I’m here to tell you that LA has some absolutely amazing locations that are perfect for capturing beautiful memories all year long with your family. From the coastal beauty of Santa Monica to the lush greenery of Palos Verdes and the urban parks right here in Culver City, there’s no shortage of stunning backdrops.
Variety of Locations for Your Family Photoshoot
One of the great things about Los Angeles is the sheer variety of settings we have at our disposal. Whether you’re envisioning a serene garden, a beachy vibe, or a nature-filled park, there’s something here for everyone. Here’s a quick guide to some of the top locations I recommend for your family photos:
- Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook, Culver City:
For families who want a view, the overlook offers a dramatic landscape with panoramic views of the city as well as rustic foliage on the trails.
- Kenneth Hahn Park, Culver City/Los Angeles Border:
This park is a classic, offering pretty bridges, ponds, and plenty of scenic spots that provide a perfect backdrop for any family.
- UCLA Campus, Westwood:
UCLA’s brick architecture and beautiful landscaping makes it a gorgeous place for more urban family photos. There are so many spots on campus to choose from!
- UCLA Mathias Botanical Garden, Westwood:
A hidden gem that provides a lush, green environment with a variety of plants and beautiful pathways. We have to get permission in advance for this one, so we need at least a few days lead time to get that done.
-
Bluff Creek Park, Playa Vista:
The trails that run along this street at the bottom of the hill leading up to the LMU campus have a beautiful, rustic appeal. We need to get permission to shoot here, but can usually get that done in a few days.
- Franklin Canyon, Beverly Hills:
A nature lover’s paradise, this location offers lakes, trails, and a gorgeous natural setting. This is also the best spot to get some fall foliage. (Note: There’s a $150 permit fee required here and we’d need ample lead time to get that settled)
- Santa Monica Beach at the Annenberg Community Beach House, Santa Monica:
Ideal for a more relaxed, beachy family vibe. The golden sand, ocean waves and mountain views make for a timeless backdrop. Easy parking too!
- Venice Canals & Beach, Venice:
If you’re looking for a mix of beach and quirky urban charm, the Venice Canals and nearby beach offer a unique and visually interesting setting. We’d start with a walk around the canals and then continue on to the beach for sunset. This route does involve a lot of walking but it’s a great walk!
- Malaga Cove Plaza, Palos Verdes:
This spot offers stunning Mediterranean-style architecture and beautiful views, making it perfect for a more formal or elegant family shoot.
- Malaga Cove Beach, Palos Verdes:
A rustic path to a beach with rocky outcrops and tide pools, offering a more rugged coastal vibe. (Note: We walk down a paved path to get to the beach, which is easy on the way down but it’s quite a steep walk back up).
South Coast Botanical Garden, Palos Verdes:
A sprawling garden with a diverse range of plants and landscapes. (Note: There’s a $50 permit fee plus ticket costs here).
- Abalone Cove, Palos Verdes:
A beach with dramatic cliffs and tide pools, perfect for adventurous families who want something a little different. (This does involve a bit of a hike down to the water and back up afterwards).
Ferndell Park, Griffith Park area:
A shaded, tranquil park with winding trails and lots of greenery, perfect for a more relaxed, nature-focused photoshoot. The uphill trail and view of Griffith Observatory is a huge plus!
Travel Town, Griffith Park area:
If you have a little one who loves things that go, this museum and park featuring vintage trains will be a favorite spot!
Tailoring Your Photo Session to Your Family’s Vibe
Every family is unique, and your photos should reflect that. Whether you’re leaning towards a beachy fall theme, love the idea of lush gardens, or want something with a more urban or park-like feel, there’s a location that matches your aesthetic. Here’s a quick breakdown of some of the aesthetics and backgrounds for your family photoshoot:
Park Settings: Ideal for families who want a natural, relaxed backdrop with lots of greenery.
Trails: Great for adventurous families who love the idea of capturing moments in a more rugged, nature-filled setting.
Gardens: Perfect for a more refined, elegant look with beautiful, manicured greenery.
Beach: For families who want a laid-back, classic Southern California vibe.
Urban Settings: If your family is more modern or loves the city life, urban locations offer dynamic backgrounds with interesting architectural elements.
Timelines: Plan Ahead for the Best Results
When it comes to timing your family photoshoot, the earlier, the better! Many families start thinking about it when it’s time to get that holiday card ready, but there are some great reasons to book earlier in the year.
Firstly, securing your session early means you have your pick of the best locations before they get too crowded with other families who had the same idea! Plus, you’ll be ahead of the game for holiday cards, which is always a plus. If cards are a priority for you, make sure to book a date before Thanksgiving so I have enough time to edit and get your images ready for you. Keep in mind that weekend spots tend to fill up quickly, but if you’re flexible, weekdays are often better since the locations are less crowded.
I look forward to seeing many of my returning famlies this year and meeting some new ones to make memories with!
