Los Angeles Travel Photographer, Emily Winnie
Oh, where do I even begin? My recent journey to Oaxaca with Solo Female Travelers as their group photographer was nothing short of magical. This immersive, women-only tour was a dream come true, blending rich culture, delectable cuisine, and the vibrant spirit of Oaxaca. Let me take you through some of the highlights of this unforgettable experience.
Day 1: Arrival and First Impressions
This is a city that buzzes with life, colors popping at every corner (the most incredible murals I’ve ever seen everywhere you look!). Our group gathered for a walking tour where we were given an overview of the history and culture of Oaxaca. We concluded our evening with a welcome dinner, indulging in traditional dishes that danced on our taste buds, setting the tone for the culinary delights to come.
Day 2: A Feast for the Senses
Our second day was a gastronomic adventure. We wandered through bustling markets, the air thick with the aroma of spices, fresh produce, and, of course, chocolate. Engaging with primarily women-owned businesses is a goal of Solo Female Travelers, we learned about the passion and resilience that drive these entrepreneurs at every stop. The day culminated in a mezcal tasting, where we sipped on this smoky spirit, gaining an appreciation for its cultural significance and the craftsmanship involved in its production.
Day 3: Weaving Stories Through Textiles
If I had to pick just one favorite experience, this would be it! Visiting a women’s weaving cooperative was absolutely incredible. Watching the artisans dye yarn using natural plants and insects, then skillfully weaving intricate patterns, was mesmerizing. Each piece told a story, woven with tradition and pride. Seeing their artistry firsthand made me appreciate the craftsmanship even more, and I came home with a beautiful woven bag for myself as well as a sweetly embroidered dress for my baby niece.
Day 4: Artistry and Tradition
Oaxaca’s artistic heritage is awe-inspiring. We tried our hand at painting alebrijes—those whimsical, brightly colored folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures. Visiting workshops, we witnessed the meticulous process of crafting black pottery and modern huaraches. The artisans’ dedication to preserving their ancestral techniques was truly inspiring, and I couldn’t resist bringing home a few handcrafted treasures. If I’m ever designing a new home, I plan on going back for more of that gorgeous black pottery!
Day 5: Nature’s Wonders and Ancient Rituals
This was one of my favorite days of the trip! Our excursion took us to Hierve El Agua, a set of natural rock formations resembling cascading waterfalls. The panoramic views were breathtaking, and the mineral-rich pools invited us for a refreshing dip. The beauty of this place was truly surreal—I could have spent the entire day soaking it all in (literally and figuratively!). Later, we participated in a traditional Temazcal ceremony—a cleansing ritual that left us rejuvenated, both physically and spiritually.
Day 6: Ancient Echoes
Our journey culminated with a visit to Monte Albán, the majestic pre-Columbian archaeological site. Walking among the ruins, I could almost hear the echoes of ancient Zapotec ceremonies. And then our trip concluded with an afternoon exploration of Mezcal making and a beautiful dinner in the Agave fields.
Reflections
This tour was more than just sightseeing; it was an immersion into what makes Oaxaca so special. The friendships formed among our group of women travelers added a layer of connection and shared joy to every experience. From the flavors that tantalized our palates to the artisans who opened their workshops and hearts to us, every moment was a testament to Oaxaca’s vibrant culture and the warmth of its people.
If you’re seeking an adventure that nourishes the spirit, ignites the senses, and connects you with like-minded women, I wholeheartedly recommend both Oaxaca and Solo Female Travelers. I will carry the colors, flavors, and rhythms of this trip with me for a long time, and I can’t wait to return and explore even more.
