As a Los Angeles Family Photographer, I can confidently say that winter is one of the most overlooked and underrated seasons for family photos here in Southern California. While everyone rushes to book spring and fall sessions, winter quietly delivers some of the most beautiful, relaxed, and timeless images of the year.
One of the biggest perks of winter sessions is the soft, flattering light. The sun sits lower in the sky, which creates a gorgeous glow without the harsh brightness we often see in summer. If we’re lucky, a few clouds roll in and give us those breathtaking sunsets that look straight out of a painting. Winter light has a way of making photos feel calm, cozy, and emotional in the very best way.
Another huge win? Fewer crowds. Popular locations, especially the beach, are much quieter in the winter months. That means less distraction for kids, more room to move around, and a much more relaxed experience overall. And yes, the beach is hands-down my favorite place to shoot year-round. In winter, it’s even better.
The earlier sunset is also a game changer, especially for families with younger kids. Since the sun goes down earlier, we’re not pushing bedtime to catch golden hour. Kiddos are happier, parents are less stressed, and the session feels easier for everyone involved.
And while winter might sound chilly, Los Angeles winters are actually incredibly comfortable. We keep moving, exploring, walking, playing, and interacting so no one is standing still feeling cold. Layers also photograph beautifully and add texture and warmth to your images.
Winter sessions aren’t just perfect for families, they’re also a lovely option for a Los Angeles maternity photoshoot. Cooler temperatures, softer light, and quieter locations make it a comfortable and peaceful time to document this special season before your baby arrives.
